Well done on getting Mint upgrade up and running. Your linux setup sounds impressive. It is hard to get past MPRO as it is so capable and flexible compared with other databases. I have done some preliminary research and can't see anything as good and now vDos has let me use MPRO on Win 10 the pressure is off. I'm 66 and live in Northern Ireland by the way, are you UK mainland? just out of interest. I thought 200k records was large for home use but 25k is still a lot to control if you didn't use MPRO. When at work I had files of 100k + and MPRO coped fine but you did have to monitor the 16Mb file limit. 16Mb seems a bit small now for a file limit but in it's day it seemed enormous and I suppose John Campbell thought it big enough. I wonder now is a technical dos limit or did he just have to pick a figure and thought it futureproof.
Best wishes
Roy

I'm in West Cumbria.
My home banking file sizes are: DAT 2Mb, DA0 120.8kb, DA1 210.9kb, DA2 507.9kb, DA3 301.1kb, DAS 55.3kb. So I've got quite a way to go before I reach the 16Mb size limit. I agree it does sound rather arbitrary, a bit like that chap who asked why would anyone want more then 640kb RAM, or the IBM chappie who thought that there was probably enough work for three computers worldwide! Maybe you're right, and it is changeable. A quick think suggests that 16Mb = 3 x 8bit bytes, and there are quite a number of places where there are three or more consecutive bytes which are "reserved". But if it was three bytes, then this suggests that it is indeed a specific limit fixed by the three bytes.
A top of the head think suggests that a way round it might be to split any large files into a number of smaller ones based on dates or similar, in my case I would use 19xx & 20xx, and if further splitting was required than I suppose one could go down to decades. Not that I'd be doing it, life's too short now.

Something a bit silly!
Has anyone noticed that in the James Bond film, Licence to Kill, at about 43 mins 48 secs, there is a screen shot of Masterfile by Campbell Systems? Licence to Kill was released in 1989 so probably filmed before the release of Masterfile Professional. I wonder of this the original Masterfile, ie prior to MasterfilePC.

I can still run MFPC on my (reserve) xp laptop but my problem is e.g how to convert and transfer the databases into one of the newer Family History programmes ... I'm now using RootsMagic 7.
Years ago in the late 1990's?? I believe there was an intermediate programme which converted the data and then one downloaded this to Windows? There was a FH Society called 'Computers in Genealogy' which published monthly? magazines (I still have a couple but not the relevant ones) where this procedure was explained & where to get the appropriate software.
Any help warmly welcomed

Hi Frank, A few thoughts. It's a long time since I used MFPC (1999 to be exact) so I've forgotten just what MFPC can do, but I've had a bit of a look around. It seems that RootsMagic 4 (yes, I know yours is 7) uses the SQLite3 engine (source - Wikipedia) so on the assumption that version 7 uses the same, then possibly the way round it might be to discover how the database files are laid out in RM7 and then write a set of instructions to export the MFPC data in the same format. How and where you will find this info I really do not know, and I wouldn't know where to start. I assume you know all about the MFPC file layout. But assuming you can find this info, it may also be necessary to write a BASIC program to do the conversion.
Another thought might be to find out if RM7 can read what appears to be the de facto standard for geneology files - GEDCOM. If so, then it might be easier to convert the MFPC files to the GEDCOM format, and then upload to RM7. Again, it might be necessary to use a BASIC program to do the conversion.
Of course, depending on how many records, as a last resort you could retype the MFPC data! Only kidding!

Can someone help me please? I have been relying on MFPC and MPRO from the days when Mr. Cameron was answering the phone and dealing with technical queries.
Recently, I have run into a major problem - when entering information, I get the following error message:
Drive 7: misc. error Retry Cancel
Repeated tapping of ‘R’ and/or ‘C’ keys eventually can prompt another error message:
Disk full/error code 3 Press any key
Also get following message when trying to copy files:
Overlay not found or no free handles Press any key
At the age of 75 and coping with Parkinson’s disease, I’m not as capable nowadays.
I have been using Microsoft Excel for other purposes but, although reluctant to change from MPRO, I would be prepared to transfer to Excel but that seems to be an impossible task, even for computer experts.
If anyone out there can offer some easy to follow advice, I would be extremely grateful.
Richard.

Hello Richard,
Just seen your message above - which shows how often I now check this site.
No idea at all about the "Drive 7:misc error Retry Cancel"
I've had the "Overlay missing" error report when experimenting whilst setting up my system, and this was caused by Mpro looking in the wrong place for a MPRO.OVx file. The cure was to set Mpro.com to look in the correct place.
The "No Free Handles" refers to the entry "files=xx" in your config.sys file where Campbell recommends a minimum of 65.
But as the system has been working satisfactorily, unless something drastic has happened, somehow I doubt that either of the above two problems is applicable. Which leaves me to suspect that your hard disk, if you are using one, is getting full. Unfortunately, having left Windows behind some years ago in favour of Linux, I cannot remember how to check your hard disk usage. Sorry.
What I can do though, is ask a question on another forum of which I am a member. Whilst this forum is not a computer forum, it does have a section for all sorts of oddities, for example I recently asked about caravan insurance, and received advice which ultimately resulted in my premium halving. It wasn't quite as simple as that, but the thread was absolutely nothing to do with the main focus of the forum. Should you wish to take up my offer, I'd like to ask you to post a few more details here, eg Windows version, hard disk size, RAM size.

Is anyone other than me still reading this forum?
And more importantly, is anyone other than me still using Mpro?
And finally, is Robert Carnaghan still about?
